Monday, August 17, 2009

Before they hit the books in a new semester, more than 2,500 University of North Carolina at Wilmington students will play in the sun during Beach Blast. This annual event and the following clean up, Beach Sweep, are part of UNCWelcome activities.

WHEN: Tuesday, Aug. 18, Beach Blast 11 a.m. - 3 p.m., Beach Sweep 4 - 6 p.m.
WHERE: Crystal Pier at Wrightsville Beach, near the Oceanic restaurant
WHAT: Freshmen and returning students will engage in fun activities like surf lessons and volleyball at Wrightsville Beach, followed by a beach sweep. The alcohol-free event invites the UNCW community to enjoy free music and food and other activities. Approximately 40 UNCW staff, student leaders and local police will assist with the management of the event.

UNCW students will be checked for alcohol before entering Beach Blast. A valid UNCW student ID will be required to board free shuttles and receive a wristband needed to participate in Beach Blast activities. Fencing will clearly indicate the perimeters where Beach Blast activity is to occur.

Media are invited to this event, but Beach Blast is not to be promoted to the general public, who will be granted access to the event, but will not receive wristbands and cannot obtain free vendor refreshments.
