Flood Watch for New Hanover County; Potential for Flooding on Campus

Tuesday, November 10, 2009

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for New Hanover County from 1 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11 through late Thursday night. The remnants of Hurricane Ida will bring heavy rainfall to the area, with the heaviest rain expected Wednesday afternoon and evening. Four to six inches of rain is expected throughout the county with higher amounts possible in some areas.

Heavy rains may cause localized flooding on and adjacent to the campus. Be aware of possible hazardous conditions if rains are heavy, particularly in areas prone to flooding, such as the intersection of Reynolds and Cahill Dr., New Centre Drive, Seahawk Landing, Honors Hall Parking Lot and Parking Lot E. Some of these areas may be closed to traffic if heavy rain occurs. As a precaution, you may want to relocate your vehicle from these flood prone areas. Do not attempt to drive through standing waters.

A flood watch means there is a potential for flooding based on current forecasts. All students, faculty and staff should monitor local weather forecasts and be on the alert for flood warnings. Please check the UNCW Web site for updates or call the UNCWAlert emergency information hotline at 910.962.3991 or 888.657.5751. The Adverse Weather Policy is applicable for faculty and staff.
