Leutze to Lead UNC Wilmington Trip to Sicily and Rome in May 2010; Registration Open Now

James Leutze, noted war historian and chancellor emeritus at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, will lead a unique 11-day trip to Sicily and Rome, Italy, in May 2010.

Sponsored by UNCW’s Division for Public Service and Continuing Studies, the trip begins with the ancient sites of Sicily, including Palermo, the Greek Theatre and the extinguished craters of Mount Etna. Leutze will offer his expertise on the historic sites of World War II and the Italian campaign led by General Patton in 1943. The trip ends with two days in Rome, including guided tours of the classic monuments.

The trip to Italy is scheduled for May 16-27, 2010. The cost of $3,599 per person includes roundtrip airfare, all accommodations and most meals. Leutze is a former professor of history at UNC, where he was twice recognized for his excellence in undergraduate teaching. He later served as president of Hampden-Sydney College and chancellor of UNC Wilmington. Leutze created Globe Watch, an international affairs program, which aired for 15 years on public television networks. His recent television documentaries address environmental issues and their global implications for economics and society. He has been awarded the Bernath Prize for distinguished publication in the area of American foreign policy and the John Lyman Book Award in U.S. Naval History.
