Perceptions and Memories, a Film on Henry Miller and Salvador Dali, Premieres at UNC Wilmington Jan. 28

Friday, January 22, 2010

Perceptions and Memories, Joseph Kishton's documentary on the relationship of Spanish artist Salvador Dalí and American writer Henry Miller, will premiere with a free showing and reception at the University of North Carolina Wilmington's Lumina Theater on Thursday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. Kishton is a professor in UNCW's Department of Psychology.

Perceptions and Memories
is an unconventional documentary that traces the antagonistic relationship between surrealist painter Dalí and controversial novelist Miller. The film reveals how their paths crossed for the first time in expatriate Paris and for the last time at the end of a wild night at an artists' colony on a plantation in Virginia.

The showing will be preceded by a 10-minute contextual statement by Kishton, followed by the film, a question-and-answer session and an audio piece. A soirée in the Fisher Student Center's Clocktower Lounge, co-sponsored by Randall Library and the psychology department, will follow the screening.

Kishton's previous documentary Henry Miller Is Not Dead had a wide run on American and Canadian public television and was shown as a selection of UNC TV's North Carolina Visions independent film series. Kishton is currently working with the Henry Miller Memorial Library in Big Sur, Calif. on a collaborative project to collect and archive existing audio recordings of Miller for researchers.
