200 Students to Participate in Southeastern Regional Science Fair at UNCW Feb. 20
Wednesday, February 17, 2010
Two hundred students in grades three to 12 from 10 area counties will put their thinking caps on at the 2010 Southeast Regional Science Fair at the University of North Carolina Wilmington Saturday, Feb. 20.
Media are invited to experience project demonstrations from 12:45-1:45 p.m. and the awards program at 2:30 p.m. in Hanover Hall Gym. The event is hosted by the UNC Wilmington Science and Mathematics Education Center (SMEC).
Students will compete in the categories of biology, earth, physical and technology. More than 30 university faculty members, students, retired teachers and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) professionals from the community will be judging entries. Projects selected by judges at the regional level will advance to the North Carolina Science & Engineering Fair at Meredith College in March.
According to SMEC director Karen Shafer, “The science fair gives every student the opportunity to have fun with science.” SMEC is dedicated to improving the quality of pre-college science, mathematics and technology education in order to encourage student interest and knowledge in these areas at a young age.
Media are invited to promote and cover the fair. Event leaders, participating students and judges will be available for interviews.
