A Decade of Fighting Violence against Women: UNC Wilmington Presents The Vagina Monologues, Feb. 11-14
Tuesday, February 02, 2010
The Women's Studies and Resource Center at the University of North Carolina Wilmington continues its efforts to end violence with its production of The Vagina Monologues on Feb. 11, 13 and 14, 2010 in UNCW's Lumina Theater. The Women's Center and UNCW are commemorating the tenth anniversary of this production, inspired by the celebration of V-Day and its efforts to raise local and global awareness of abuse and violence against women and girls. All proceeds will benefit the Rape Crisis Center of Coastal Horizons Center and the Domestic Violence Shelter and Services in Wilmington.
The Vagina Monologues consists of a series of short narratives performed by all demographics that provides insight into women's lives and experiences. Some monologues evoke pain, suffering and outrage, while others inspire passion, humor and power. First performed and written by Eve Ensler, The Vagina Monologues has been a success for more than 10 years.
First-year director of the Women's Studies Resource Center, Michelle Scatton-Tessier said, "to me, our benefit performances encompass every part of our Center's mission: they bring together UNCW and the community for three evenings of awareness and engagement, with both a local and global perspective."
Tickets for The Vagina Monologues are $10 for general public and $8 for students. They are available to purchase through etix.com and in person at Sharkey's Box Office, Fisher Student Center, 910.962.4045. Show times are as follows:
• Thursday, Feb. 11, 7p.m.
• Saturday, Feb. 13, 7p.m.
• Sunday, Feb. 14, 2p.m.
Production costs are funded on a donation basis only, so that all proceeds will be donated directly to the shelters, with a modest contribution to V-Day. The performance is directed by Amy Feath of Coastal Horizons, and the cast consists of 20 volunteers, including students.
What is V-Day?
V-Day is a non-profit catalyst that works to end all violence against women and girls including rape, incest, battery, genital mutilation and sexual slavery. It strives to raise awareness and to unify anti-violence efforts to help women throughout the world. The movement will not stop until the violence does.
In 2009, V-Day began its Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Campaign to help stop rape and violence in Eastern DRC. The college and community campaign activists spread the message of the Congo Campaign at more than 5,200 V-Day events, in 1,400 communities and college campuses, and 50 countries, offering millions of women and men critical information to help end violence and raising more than $200,000 for the women of Congo.
