Boseman Gallery Makes Waves with Interactive Audio Exhibition

Monday, February 22, 2010

The UNC Wilmington Ann Flack Boseman Gallery has been transformed into an urban street scene with “Making Waves,” an interactive audio exhibition. The images, done by student graffiti and sound artists along with creative writers, are paired with sound recordings activated by buttons and a poetic narrative. The exhibit runs through March 4.

Students submitted personally created and/or enhanced sound bites.   Some sounds are electronic in nature, some are physically recorded and one submission is a musical piece composed for the exhibition.  The concept has been propagated by artists globally, with the premise that the foundation of both sound art and contemporary art share a similar spirit of inquiry and experimentation.

Graffiti artist Zachary Duff states, “While the purpose of my works is to turn a critical eye onto injustice, I attempt to do so in an approachable way.  My desire is to make reality absurd, the unapproachable approachable, and that which is ugly appear beautiful.  By doing this, it is my hope that any individual who views my work might come away with a less ethno and egocentric view of the world, and instead make an effort to understand and appreciate the views of others.”
