Former Nuclear Weapons Inspector in Iraq to speak at UNC Wilmington March 2

Dr. David Kay, former nuclear weapons inspector in Iraq, will speak on “Nuclear Weapons: What is the Threat?” from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 2 at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Sponsored by the Osher Lifelong Learning Center, the talk includes dinner and is $30 for OLLI members and $40 for non-members.Kay served as the International Atomic Energy Agency/United Nations Special Commission Chief Nuclear Weapons Inspector, leading numerous inspections into Iraq following the end of the Gulf War. In 2003, the CIA appointed Kay to lead the hunt for “weapons of mass destruction” (WMDs) in Iraq. Kay resigned his position after reporting his conclusion that there had been no stockpiles of WMDs in Iraq at the time of the war. He is now a senior fellow at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies and a consultant focusing on counter terrorism and weapons proliferation.
Kay has frequently testified before Congress, and his articles have appeared widely in U.S. media and scholarly journals. He also has been a frequent radio and television commentator on nuclear and defense matters. Kay holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin and a master's in International Affairs, as well as a Ph.D., from Columbia University. He is the recipient of the IAEA's Distinguished Service Award and the U.S. Secretary of State's Commendation.
