500 to Fight for the Job at UNC Wilmington Internship and Job Fair March 31

Tuesday, March 30, 2010

A more positive job outlook is predicted for University of North Carolina Wilmington students planning to graduate this spring. More than 50 job recruiters will network with students in business dress at the UNC Wilmington Internship and Job Fair 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 31 in the Burney Center.

Thom Rakes, director of the UNCW Career Center said the more than 500 anticipated fair attendees will continue to experience a highly competitive job market, while companies are hiring more now than they have in the last two years.

"This is a great opportunity for students to network and practice professionalism. Personal contact is phenomenally important, especially these days," Rakes said.

Participating job fair recruiters will be from markets ranging from media to finance. May 2010 graduates will be competing with those who graduated in earlier semesters but could not find a job during the economic downturn. This need for jobs is confirmed by the 20 percent increase in student career counseling appointments at the Career Center in the past year.

The Career Center has actively recruited employers for fair as part of its many free services to UNCW students and alumni. Community members are also welcomed to attend the job fair.

Media are invited to cover the fair and to capture interviews with participants and experts by request.
