Novelist and Alumnus George Bishop to Read at UNC Wilmington March 3
Monday, March 01, 2010
University of North Carolina Wilmington alumnus George “Beau” Bishop will read from his debut novel Letter to My Daughter at 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 3 in Kenan Hall 1111.Bishop is the author of the novel Letter to My Daughter, published February 16 by Ballantine. Written as a letter from a mother, Laura, to her runaway teenage daughter, Liz, Bishop’s debut captures a sense of time and place with a distinct and inviting voice. Author Pat Conroy called it “A first novel of immense power.” Laura describes her own troubled adolescence in rural Louisiana, growing up in an intensely conservative household, and finally reveals the meaning of a mysterious tattoo on her hip. Letter to My Daughter is a story of mothers, daughters and lessons learned in coming of age.
Bishop graduated with degrees in English literature and communications from Loyola University and earned his Masters of Fine Arts in fiction from the UNCW Department of Creative Writing in 2001. He has lived and taught English in Slovakia, Turkey, Indonesia, Azerbaijan, India and Japan. He now lives in New Orleans.
