Wilmington Information Technology Exchange and Conference to Bring Together Local IT Community March 25

Monday, March 08, 2010

Wilmington area information technology professionals will have the opportunity to come together with UNC Wilmington faculty and students to network, explore the latest technologies and hear from experts on issues in the field as part of the 2010 Wilmington Information Technology Exchange and Conference (WITX). A particular focus of this year's event will be Internet and data security.

Hosted by the University of North Carolina Wilmington, WITX will begin at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 25 in the Computer Information Systems building on campus. All activities are open to the public and are free unless otherwise noted.

Last year's WITX conference drew more than 300 participants, and organizers have planned for an even bigger event this year, according to Tom Janicki, professor in the Cameron School of Business.

"This event has grown bigger and more successful each year since its inception in 2005," he said. "We plan to continue that tradition this year with more vendors, more attendees and a new feature we're introducing, learning exchanges led by leading professionals."

This year's learning exchange topics include "Building Mobile Phone Applications," "Creating an End-to-End Identity Management Architecture" and "Unified Communications in 2010." All seminars begin at 3 p.m. and have a registration fee of $25. To register online, go to www.uncw.edu/wilmit.

Other activities include a keynote speaker presentation at 4 p.m. and a vendor showcase highlighting various technologies and products, with more than 30 exhibits by UNCW students and faculty as well as technology businesses, which will open at 5 p.m. A food and refreshment tent will also be open to participants at 5 p.m.

Keynote presenter Gary Kessler, associate professor of digital investigation management at Champlain College in Burlington, Vt., will speak on "Musings about Information Security, Information Warfare and Cybercrime."

WITX is sponsored by the Cameron School of Business, the Department of Information Systems and Operations Management, the Department of Computer Science and the UNCW Corporate IT Advisory Board.

Media are invited to attend and cover this event, including live shots for evening news shows. Visual opps will include student, faculty and vendor demonstrations, seminars and networking activities. Interviews will be available prior to, as well as during, the event. For more information, please visit www.uncw.edu/wilmit.
