Path to Nursing Career Paved for High School Students Graduating from UNC Wilmington Program

Wednesday, April 14, 2010

After four years of intensive healthcare training and experience, the high school students of the 2006 University of North Carolina Wilmington Camp BONES (Brigade of Nurse Exploring Seahawks) class will graduate from the program. The ceremony will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, April 17 in UNCW Madeline Suite. Most of the graduates have earned nursing assistant certification and are headed to college for healthcare careers.

A UNCW Nursing and Health Academy, Camp BONES prepares underrepresented middle and high school students to be successful in college and health science careers with hands-on training ranging from monitoring vital signs to infant delivery. Students have access to programs, experts and academic resources similar to that of nursing undergraduates. Families, friends, faculty, students and supporters will be in attendance at the graduation.

The event is funded by a grant from the N.C. GlaxoSmithKline Foundation.
