UNC Wilmington Students Attack Tough Job Market through Job Search Boot Camp April 14

Monday, April 12, 2010

Attention! To prepare graduating students for their role as job recruits, the UNC Wilmington Career Center is hosting a Job Search Boot Camp to get students—and their resumes—in top shape for the competitive job market. The Boot Camp will provide students with drop-in help with all their job search needs.

WHEN: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday, April 14, 2010
WHERE: Fisher University Union 2034, UNCW Career Center
WHAT: UNC Wilmington students and alumni will receive basic training on vital job-seeking skills including resume building, cover letter construction and job interviewing. Professional drill sergeants, i.e. career counselors, will guide students through job searching and personal finance strategy and planning.

Special duty stations include:
• Line Up for Resume Review
• Combat Training: Job Interviews and Professional Uniforms
• Identify Your Job Search Targets
• Budgeting for New Recruits: Personal Finance

The event is a service of the UNCW Career Center, which has increased its extensive services to help students combat the current difficult job market. The first Boot Camp was held in spring 2009, and the event has been presented each semester to give students a competitive edge and improved confidence during the job search process. More than 100 students have attended each event.

"We want students to know that, while it is a very challenging job market, there are things they can do to make themselves more marketable and we're here to assist them," said Career Center director Thom Rakes. "Students who have attended Boot Camp say they felt so relieved afterward, because they learned the first step or two they needed to take in the process.

"The idea of a job search is always overwhelming," he added. "Students just need someone to help them get started."

Media are invited to capture hands-on visuals and counseling sessions. Interviews with participants available upon request.
