A Camp Double Feature June 21-25: Learning Made Fun for Young Innovators at UNCW

Two camps at the University of North Carolina Wilmington will prepare local middle and high school students for a brighter future June 21-25, 2010.

Junior Seahawk Academy

Sixty area middle school students will participate in the Junior Seahawk Academy, a camp designed to help underrepresented students develop an interest in learning math, science and technology while participating in fun and creative hands-on activities.

Camp activities are designed to help students understand the core concepts of North Carolina's standard course of study, with a focus on engaging students in looking at how alternative and renewable energy sources can help improve the air we breathe, the water we drink and the land on which we live. Each activity has a literacy component in which students read and present information learned during the academy.

Camp highlights include:
Tuesday, June 22
9:10 -11:30 a.m. - undergraduates students will present research and guide campers through fossil research in the lab, Deloach Hall 105
Wednesday, June 23
1-2:30 p.m. – Bottle rocket launching, between the Education Building and the Cultural Arts Building
Thursday, June 24
9:40-11:30 a.m. - Ice Cream Challenge – students will
make ice cream as a science activity, and the best batch will be chosen by judges, Education Building courtyard or lobby
1-2:30 p.m. - Ice Cream Challenge, Education Building courtyard or lobby
1-2:30 p.m. - Bottle rocket launching, between the Education Building and the Cultural Arts Building
Friday, June 25
11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. – Closing ceremony, Education Building 162 and lobby

Enov8t

Local high school students will get innovative with Enov8t a new UNC Wilmington camp focused on helping young entrepreneurs learn about building a business from concept to completion.

Campers will develop business ideas, write a business plan, learn the basics of financial management, marketing and selling, ultimately presenting their own "rocket pitch" to local business leaders on the final day of camp. Teens will also participate in hands-on activities focused on developing teamwork and leadership skills. Business leaders, Jonathan Rowe, director of the UNCW Entrepreneurship Center, and Fran Scarlett, regional director of the UNCW Small Business & Technology Development Center, will mentor campers.

Tuesday, June 22
10 a.m. - Ropes course, meet in Parking Lot I (media should bring walking shoes)
3 p.m. - Idea lab with mentors, CIS 1003
Wednesday, June 23
9 a.m. - Creating a Rocket Pitch, CIS 1012
10:30 a.m. - Outdoor team building activities, lobby or outdoor patio of CIS building
1 p.m. - Lab time with mentors, CIS 1003
Thursday, June 24
9 a.m. - Writing a Business Plan, CIS 1012
1:30 p.m. - Lab time with SBTDC counselors, CIS 1003
Friday, June 25
9:30 a.m. - Rocket Pitch practice, closing team building, Madeline Suite (adjacent to Wagoner Hall)
11:30 a.m. (media should arrive at 11:15) - Student Rocket Pitch presentations to area business leaders, Madeline Suite (adjacent to Wagoner Hall)
