The University of North Carolina Wilmington has named Robert Hoon as its new general counsel. Hoon served as UNCW's deputy general counsel for more than five years.Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo noted that Hoon's experience in contract management and negotiation, construction and public works, public finance, copyright, patents, real estate and business transactions have been, and will continue to be, a tremendous asset to UNCW.
"Rob's thorough knowledge of the opportunities and challenges unique to our university made him stand out among a strong group of applicants," she said. "Many of our plans for the future – such as negotiating public-private partnerships for regional economic development and securing patents for new discoveries – require the skills of a diligent, persistent and professional general counsel such as Rob."
Hoon's previous experience in higher education includes serving Washington State University in multiple capacities, including as an assistant attorney general, real estate officer, public finance officer and director of business services. After relocating to North Carolina, Hoon worked at NC State University for 3 years before coming to UNCW, where he ultimately served as deputy general counsel. He earned his bachelor's degree in political science at Washington State University, graduating summa cum laude, and received his law degree from the University of Washington in 1986. He is a member of both the North Carolina and Washington Bar Associations.
