Wednesday, June 23, 2010

A University of North Carolina Wilmington surfer dominated the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) National Championships. UNCW's Mike Powell, a graduating senior majoring in finance, won the national title in the College Men's Division. The championship was held from June 16-19 in Salt Creek, Calif.

UNCW surfers also had strong performances in other divisions. Mike Powell's brother Ben took third place in the Men's Division. Drake Courie placed fourth in the College Longboard Division. Overall, UNCW placed fourth in the College Team rankings.

The NSSA is the preeminent organization for scholastic surfers in the country. Team members competed in individual competitions in men's, women's and longboard divisions. Individual scores were combined to determine the team's overall score.

This marks the second year in a row that UNCW has finished strong at the Nationals. In 2009, Ben Powell finished second, Mike Powell finished third in the men's division and Courie finished fifth in the longboard competition. Overall, UNCW finished second place as a team last year.
