Parade of "Sim" Mannequins Marches to New School of Nursing Building at UNC Wilmington

Tuesday, July 13, 2010

University of North Carolina Wilmington nursing students and faculty carefully transported seven mannequins in wheelchairs and on stretchers from the School of Nursing's current location in temporary quarters to the university's new Nursing Building Monday, July 12.

Simulation learning is a hallmark of the UNCW School of Nursing, and expansion of simulation space and capabilities is one of the key features of the new building. The facility also boasts expanded classroom facilities and the opportunity to place all nursing students, faculty, administrators and teaching space under one roof. The new building provides nearly 10,000 square feet of space for the Simulation Learning Center, compared to one small laboratory (less than 1,000 square feet) that has been used while the new building was under construction.

In opening the new building, the School of Nursing has also been able to purchase several new simulators, which will give the school nearly 15 units for use in the new building's six main specialty laboratories. These labs provide dedicated space and equipment for skills education and practice in health assessment, acute care, critical care, pediatrics, maternal/infant care and operating room/emergency room procedures.

The Nursing Building will officially open later this summer and will be used for classes, labs and other purposes for nursing education starting in the fall semester.
