UNC Wilmington Freshman Honors Scholars to Hold Beach Sweep at Kure Beach Aug 28

Friday, August 27, 2010

For the ninth consecutive year, first-year students in the Honors Scholars Program at the University of North Carolina Wilmington will kick off the new academic year with a beach sweep at Kure Beach in southern New Hanover County, Saturday Aug. 28, 2010, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

"We know Pleasure Island has a lot to offer our students—the aquarium, Fort Fisher and other attractions—and we want to encourage them to learn about the Cape Fear area. We also want them to understand the importance of caring for our beach environment." says Kate Bruce, program director.

As in past years, the 125-plus students will cover a large expanse of the area. In keeping with this year’s UNCW Common Reading Program selection, No Impact Man, the Honors students are developing low impact ways to dispose of trash collected from the beach, with a focus on recycling and collecting trash in reusable containers rather than plastic bags.

The Honors Scholars Program offers academic enrichment to students at UNCW. In addition to their classes, students are encouraged to participate in volunteer service and learn more about the Wilmington area.
