CONTRA-TIEMPO Arts Residency at Bradley Creek School Offers Visual Ops with Students, Artists This Week and Next

Acclaimed Latin dance company CONTRA-TIEMPO is in the midst of a two-week educational and community residency through Oct. 2, hosted by the University of North Carolina Wilmington. In addition to performances, master classes and free salsa workshops, the visit will include an in-school artist residency at Bradley Creek Elementary School.Media are welcome to cover the residency and capture photos and video of CONTRA-TIEMPO artists working hands-on with the elementary students.

WHO: Members of Latin dance company CONTRA-TIEMPO teaching and coaching students at Bradley Creek Elementary School
WHAT: CONTRA-TIEMPO will work with students to develop an original work of music and dance, created from student poetry. The dance company will then teach students the dance and conduct rehearsals with them, culminating in a final performance for New Hanover County Schools Friday, Oct. 1 and the general public Saturday, Oct. 2.
WHEN and WHERE: Student rehearsals at Bradley Creek every morning Thursday 9-23 through Thursday 9-30; performances at Kenan Auditorium Oct. 1 and 2
Rehearsal dates and times (Bradley Creek Elementary cafeteria, 6211 Greenville Loop Road):
• Thursday, 9-23, 9:30-10:30 a.m.
• Friday, 9-24, 9-10 a.m.
• Monday, 9-27, 9-10 a.m.
• Tuesday, 9-28, 9:30-10:30 a.m.
• Wednesday, 9-29, 8:30-9:30 a.m.
• Thursday, 9-30, 9:30-10:30 a.m.

Final student performance (open to all 4th/5th grade students)
Friday, Oct. 1; Two performances: 9 am & 11 am

UNCW Burney Center (7–9 p.m.) – FREE all ages
Participants will learn about Latin American culture and the origins of Salsa and Afro-Cuban dance in a fun and interactive workshop led by Ana Maria Alvarez and Cesar Garfiaz of CONTRA-TIEMPO.
CONTRA-TIEMPO is a Los Angeles-based dance company fusing Salsa, Afro-Cuban, West African and Hip-Hop to create an invigorating blend of physically intense and politically astute dance-theater.
