Wednesday, September 29, 2010

Posted at 10 p.m. EST on Wednesday, Sept. 29: The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for New Hanover County effective until 7 a.m. EST on Thursday, Sept. 30, which includes the UNCW campus. This means that weather conditions are favorable for tornado development.

UNCW is closely monitoring the weather and will activate the UNCW Seahawk Warning Siren System if a Tornado Warning is issued for the area.

The latest update from the NWS indicates that the campus will continue to experience heavy rains into the early morning hours. Classes and events that begin at or later than 5 p.m. on Wednesday were cancelled, however the normal class schedule will resume on Thursday morning.

The Adverse Weather Policy remains in effect for faculty and staff. Staff working either the evening or night shift should report as scheduled.

As conditions warrant, status updates will be posted on the UNCW website, www.uncw.edu/alert and the UNCW Alert Emergency Information Hotline at 910.962.3991 or 888.657.5751. In the meantime, please seek updated weather information from local media. For more safety information on flooding: https://sites.google.com/site/uncwalert/flood.
