National Make a Difference Day Pairs UNCW Students with Kids for Big Buddy Fishing Program

Friday, October 22, 2010

University of North Carolina Wilmington students will join the nation in celebrating this year's National Make a Difference Day by volunteering at the 3rd annual Big Buddy Fishing Program from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23 at the Fort Fisher Recreation Center. Media are invited.

Volunteers will be paired with children ages 6 to 16. The day will include an involvement carnival, free surfing lessons from Indigo Jacks, a fishing tournament, an art activity and various games. Lunch for all participants is being provided by Golden Corral.

The fishing tournament is coordinated by the Cape Fear Volunteer Center as the kick-off for their year-long Big Buddy mentoring program. The Big Buddy program provides adult mentors who guide and spend time with at-risk-youth and youth from low income and single family homes in the Wilmington community. The tournament is part of the UNCW Center for Leadership Education Service's (CLES) Saturday Seahawk Surges series.
