Outstanding Technology Innovations Help UNCW Win National Award

Wednesday, October 06, 2010

Innovative technology, functionality and collaborative efforts helped the University of North Carolina Wilmington earn the esteemed 2010 Digital Education Achievement Award (DEAA) from the national Center for Digital Education. This award recognizes "Value Add in the Hand," a collaborative project, between UNCW ITSD and the faculty-led startup company, Mobile Education LLC, founded by professors Jeff Brown and Ron Vetter.

Mobile Education LLC is a technology company whose endeavor is to create innovative, real-time, two-way text message applications for student use. The company piloted their services with the UNCW campus in 2007 and has since partnered with other universities and businesses.

The DEAA award recognizes exceptional digital technology projects in higher education that have enriched education for UNCW students.

The applications designed by Mobile Ed enable students to text to get grades, sign up for a course wait list, ask financial aid questions, view library information, track the location of the campus buses and more.

Debra Saunders-White, ITSD vice chancellor, notes, "We are delighted that our "'Value Add in the Hand'" services have been so popular on our campus and so beneficial to our students."

UNCW was recognized in the Higher Education Digital Application/Project category. For more information, visit http://www.convergemag.com/awards/education-achievement/DEAA-BOW-Awards-Announced.html .
