Young Children Can Find Spooky Pre-Halloween Fun with UNCW's "From the Spider's Web" Program Oct. 23
Thursday, October 14, 2010
The University of North Carolina Wilmington invites children ages 4–7 to participate in the Literacy Live program "From the Spider's Web" from 1 to 2:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 23, in the atrium of the Education Building. Participating kids will hang out with some spooky arachnids and learn why there is nothing to fear from helpful spiders. This program is free and open to the public.UNCW's Literacy Live encourages young children to use their imaginations, personal experiences and creativity to help interpret critically-reviewed, age-appropriate literature focusing on environmental themes. Using dramatic interpretation/play as a strategy to improve reading comprehension, Literacy Live is a fun way to help children develop literacy skills while encouraging in them a sense of environmental stewardship. At each Literacy Live program, volunteers read aloud from a selection of children's books on an environmental or scientific theme. Children then participate in activities, such as dramatic interpretation using costumes, puppets or other props, games and crafts, and simple scientific experiments, based on themes in the books.
Literacy Live is sponsored by UNCW's Randall Library, the Watson School of Education and Public Service and Continuing Studies.
