UNC Wilmington's Boseman Gallery Transformed into a Work of Art
Tuesday, November 16, 2010
The UNCW Ann Flack Boseman Gallery presents Shedding Light by Meredith Connelly as its Student Scholarship Exhibition.
Connelly, a studio art major, is the recipient of the 2010-11 Ann Flack Boseman Scholarship. The scholarship is selected annually by the faculty of the Department of Art & Art History and endowed through the generosity of donors Mark Griffis and Dave Robertson in honor of Ann Boseman.
The award, which is a merit-based honor, consists of $1,000 toward tuition and solo exhibition. This is the only solo student exhibition that the Boseman Gallery hosts annually. Connelly previously served as an intern for the galley and is the art editor of Atlantis, UNCW's literary magazine and a resident artist at ACME Art Studios.
Connelly's penchant for site-based installation, nontraditional materials and light is exemplified in this exhibition, created from coffee filters and red rope lights. According to Connelly, her artwork is "designed to transform the viewers' perception of the space and redefine their interaction with that space based on the environment the work creates."
She continues, "There's this cultural shift going on in art where technology is becoming a material. Having actual electric energy running through my piece excites me. There is synchronicity between these tubes that sustain energy and our veins that sustain life. Conversely, the glowing petals also remind me of an ember, like something burning. These paradoxes keep me searching, keep me reinventing utilitarian materials for new meaning."
The exhibition runs until Sunday, Dec. 12. The Boseman Gallery is located on the second floor of the Fisher University Union. Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday-Saturday, closed Sunday.
