UNC Wilmington Entrepreneurship Center to Host Variety of Public Activities for Global Entrepreneurship Week, Nov. 16-19

Tuesday, November 16, 2010

As a part of its celebration of Global Entrepreneurship Week Nov. 16-19, the Entrepreneurship Center at the University of North Carolina Wilmington will host numerous activities for the local business community. Events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

The week will kick off with a special keynote speaker Grace Ueng, founder and CEO of Savvy Marketing Group, who will share her entrepreneurial journey as part of the Wachovia Entrepreneurial Speaker Series Tuesday, Nov. 16 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Madeline Suite. Registration is required for this free event.

Other Global Entrepreneurship Week activities include:

Nov. 17: A special screening of Ten9Eight, a film that tells the inspirational stories of several inner city teens (of different races, religions and ethnicities) from Harlem to Compton and points between, as they compete in an annual business plan competition, will be held in the CIS Building auditorium from 6 to 7:45 p.m.

Nov. 18: Greater Wilmington Business Journal’s Power Breakfast Series, in partnership with the UNCW EC, will feature an entrepreneur panel discussion from 7:30 to 10 a.m. at the Hilton Wilmington Riverside. Standard fees apply for this event. Registration is through Greater Wilmington Business Journal.

Nov. 18: A student rocket pitch event highlights the week as well, with eight top UNCW student entrepreneurs delivering five-minute “rocket pitch” presentations on their business ideas to a distinguished panel of judges. The students will compete for an $800 cash prize from 6 to 8 p.m. in Cameron Hall Auditorium 105.

Other events taking place during the week include a symposium with UNCW faculty on entrepreneurship research studies and a seminar for UNCW students on how to start a business.

“Our goal is to make this an annual event at UNCW that connects students, alumni, faculty and staff, along with our region’s entrepreneurship community. We also plan to use social media and e-learning technologies to broadcast our speakers and activities to other institutions worldwide while accessing their events and speakers as well,” said Jonathan Rowe, director of the Entrepreneurship Center.

Through this worldwide initiative, UNCW entrepreneurs will acquire the knowledge and skill set to establish and maintain innovative and sustainable businesses while making a positive impact on their lives, Rowe said.

These events are free and open to the public. Space is limited and RSVP is required
