Friday, January 07, 2011

The Art Gallery at the Cultural Arts Building opens its first exhibit of 2011 with a public artist lecture at 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, followed by a public reception from 5-7 p.m.

Adrienne Outlaw's interactive exhibition Tinker sheds light on ethical issues created by the rapid advancement of biotechnology and, in particular, the rising trend of do-it-yourselfers growing biological experiments at home. Tinker consists of three works: the Fecund Series installation, the Enhancer and How to Mistake Your ______ for a______.

An interdisciplinary artist, Outlaw has shown in 12 museum exhibits, including two solo shows. She is the recipient of several grants, awards and fellowships. Her work is in a dozen exhibition catalogs and two books on art. As part of her practice, Outlaw also writes, curates, lectures and runs programs for artists. Outlaw holds a B.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an M.L.A.S. from Vanderbilt University.

Outlaw will meet with UNCW sculpture students on Thursday afternoon, then present a public lecture at 4 p.m. in room 2033 in the Cultural Arts Building before the 5 p.m. gallery reception.

The exhibit will be open each daily Monday-Friday from noon to 4 p.m. through Feb. 18.
