Ron Vetter, a faculty member at the University of North Carolina
Wilmington, assumed the editor-in-chief position for the IEEE
Computer Society's flagship magazine, Computer, at the
beginning of 2011. He will serve a two-year term.
Vetter is a professor and past chair of the Department of Computer
Science at UNC Wilmington. In 2007, he cofounded Mobile Education
LLC, a technology company that specializes in developing
interactive short message service applications. He has served on
numerous journal editorial boards and conference committees,
including his current appointment as associate editor for
Computing Now. He received his B.S. and M.S. in computer
science from North Dakota State University, Fargo, and his Ph.D. in
computer science from the University of Minnesota,
Minneapolis.
"I am delighted to have this opportunity to serve the members of
the IEEE Computer Society as editor-in-chief of Computer,"
said Vetter. "From my experience in higher education and in
starting and running my own business, I have a strong understanding
of the kinds of technical information and ongoing training and
support the society's members are looking for. One of my primary
goals is to position the magazine to take greater advantage of the
digital revolution and enhance articles with multimedia
content."
Computer magazine covers all aspects of computer science.
For more than 40 years, developers, researchers and managers have
relied on Computer for timely, peer-reviewed information
about research, trends, best practices and changes in the
profession.
With nearly 85,000 members, the IEEE Computer Society is the
world's leading organization of computing professionals. Founded in
1946 and the largest of the 38 societies of the Institute of
Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Computer Society
is dedicated to advancing the theory and application of computers
and information-processing technology. The society serves the
information and career development needs of today's computing
researchers and practitioners with technical journals, magazines,
conferences, books, conference publications, certifications and
