200 Students to Participate in Regional Science Fair at UNCW on Feb. 12
Wednesday, February 09, 2011
Nearly 200 students in grades three to 12 will show off their smarts on Saturday, Feb. 12 at this year's Southeast Regional Science Fair (SERSF), an annual event hosted by the University of North Carolina Wilmington Science and Mathematics Education Center (SMEC). The students, fair winners from 13 different area county public and private schools, will present their science projects for a panel of judges who will determine the regional champions.
Media are invited to experience project demonstrations from 12:45 - 1:45 p.m. and the awards program at 2:30 p.m. in Hanover Hall Gym on the UNC Wilmington campus.
Winning projects chosen by SERSF judges will advance to the North Carolina Science & Engineering Fair at Meredith College in Raleigh on March 25-26.
"We are so pleased to again be hosting this event on the UNCW campus," said Karen Shafer, director of UNCW SMEC. "Science fairs encourage students to take a strong interest in science and mathematics, and to challenge themselves to do high level work in these areas. That is a direct fit with the mission of SMEC."
Part of the North Carolina Mathematics and Science Education Network, UNCW's SMEC is dedicated to improving the quality of pre-college science, mathematics and technology education in order to encourage student interest and knowledge in these areas at a young age.
