UNCW Aims at Another Record-Setting Donation to Statewide Food Drive
Monday, February 14, 2011
With the help of the community, the University of North Carolina Wilmington hopes to triple its previous record-setting donation during this year's Day of Service, an annual food drive organized by the UNC Staff Assembly.
From Feb. 1 - 28, UNC Wilmington and residents from all surrounding areas are encouraged to drop-off nonperishable items at UNCW's Randall Library and Dittos print shop located in the UNCW Fisher University Union.
Out of the 17 North Carolina public universities that participate in the Day of Service, last year UNCW set the record with the contribution of over 2,800 pounds of food for local agencies in need. The success of last year's statewide campaign led the assembly to extend the length of the event from a single day to the entire month of February. The UNCW Staff Senate has set the goal of collecting 8,500 pounds of food during this year's drive - triple the amount contributed in 2010.
The Day of Service is organized by the UNC Staff Assembly in collaboration with the UNCW Staff Senate, Faculty Senate and Student Government Association. The purpose of the food drive is to help restock local food banks with canned goods and nonperishable items after the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season depletion. The majority of the donations collected by UNCW will go to the Wilmington Food Bank, which serves agencies including area Boys and Girls Clubs, Meals on Wheels, Mother Hubbard's Cupboard, The Good Shepherd House and others.
The UNC Staff Assembly is the elected body of representatives of the staff of the 17 campuses of the UNC System and other state entities. The group aims to improve communications, understanding and morale throughout their respective communities, and to increase efficiency and productivity in campus operations. The UNCW Staff Senate serves the university, the chancellor and senior officers as an advisor on a wide range of issues concerning the UNCW staff.
Media are invited to encourage their audiences to participate in the food drive. All donations will be picked up by the food bank at 4 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 28.
