UNC Wilmington Teaching Fellows Take Student Manpower to Kinston to Help Migrant Families

Thursday, April 14, 2011

Ten Teaching Fellows from the University of North Carolina Wilmington will work with Children in the Fields and use their manpower to demolish walls and rebuild new ones in Kinston, N.C., Saturday, April 16 as they help build houses for families in migrant camps.

Children in the Fields is an organization that assists migrant families and particularly helps make sure that migrant children receive an education. Many children of migrant workers do not regularly attend school due to the economic need for them to work and help provide for their families. Some of the children are as young as 6 years old.

Teaching Fellows are North Carolina scholarship recipients who receive partial funding for college tuition with the stipulation that they teach for four years in the state after graduation. Participants in the program learn the importance of leadership, personal, social and professional growth, academic excellence and dedication to the teaching profession.

Through this opportunity with Children in the Fields, the UNCW Teaching Fellows will gain a better understanding of the needs of students from diverse backgrounds while they lend a hand to families in need.
