UNCW Assistant Professor of Art and Art History Andi Steele has been working with students from Snipes Elementary on a collaborative sculpture that will be permanently installed outside the school on June 2.

In spring of 2011, Melony Connor, art teacher at Snipes Elementary, did a sculpture independent study at UNCW under the direction of Steele, who teaches sculpture, papermaking and three-dimensional design. The focus was on learning 3D techniques suitable for elementary age students. As they moved through the semester, Steele and Conner discussed constructing a collaborative sculpture with some of her 3rd grade students.

The students developed a design using pipe cleaners. Russ Edwards, also a student of Steele's, cut and bent steel to match the model. Those pieces were transported to Snipes and the students strung cans they had painted onto the steel. The pieces will be welded together and installed outside the school at 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, June 2.

Media are invited to attend the installation of the sculpture. Please contact Caroline Cropp at 910.386.9950 for more information.
