Friday, June 17, 2011
Young fans of Jim Carrey's new film Mr. Popper's Penguins can experience penguins for themselves through a University of North Carolina Wilmington and National Science Foundation website focused on the funny little birds: http://www.uncw.edu/penguins/.
The site offers educational resources for young penguin lovers on topics including different types of penguins, the life cycles of penguins, global warming, food webs and more. Targeted for second through fourth grade students, the website also offers educational games that foster learning and skill building.
Curious students can submit questions online to Steve Emslie of the UNC Wilmington Department of Biology and Marine Biology as he conducts marine ornithology research in Antarctica to better understand penguins.
Released in theaters TODAY, June 17, Mr. Popper's Penguins will transport viewers to a winter wonderland as Carrey's character inherits six penguins. The movie is based on Florence Atwater's classic 1938 children's book, and chronicles Mr. Popper's hilarious adventures with his new penguin pals.
