UNCW and Time Warner Cable Team Up to Make Science and Technology Fun for Underserved Youth June 20-24

Monday, June 20, 2011

Underserved middle school youth will strengthen math, science and technology skills through fun, hands-on camp activities June 20-24 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Junior Seahawk Academy, a collaboration of the University of North Carolina Wilmington and Time Warner Cable (TWC).

Camp activities, created by academic faculty and staff, coincide with the North Carolina standard course of study for middle school. Students from diverse backgrounds will use hula hoops, marbles, plastic tubing and other fun materials to learn about the science behind wireless technology 9:30 a.m. Thursday, June 23. Using TWC's signature curriculum, Cracking the Codes in the Wireless World, students will participate in hands-on activities such as modeling a wireless network, exploring different types of wireless content and building cell tower backhaul network. Additional camp activities and interviews will be available to media throughout the week by request.

The Time Warner Cable Connect a Million Minds (CAMM) initiative is providing support for the Junior Seahawk Academy through monetary donations and volunteers. TWC employees will teach students about wireless technology and the importance of technology in a "wireless world." CAMM is a five-year, $100 million, philanthropic initiative designed to address America's declining proficiency in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Studies show youth with STEM skills and experience are in a better position to compete in a global economy.
