UNCW Monitoring Hurricane Irene; Significant Impact to Campus NOT Anticipated
Wednesday, August 24, 2011
UNCW is continuing to monitor the track of Hurricane Irene, which is now classified as a major hurricane, threatening the mid- Atlantic and northeastern United States. At this time, Irene's track is projected to pass offshore of the Wilmington area, and significant impacts on UNCW are not expected. As such, classes have not been cancelled, and we do not anticipate the need for an evacuation.Current forecasts include strong gale force winds and two or more inches rain beginning Friday evening and continuing through Saturday. Strong rip currents also are anticipated throughout the weekend, so persons are strongly advised to stay out of the water.
UNCW will continue to monitor Irene's path; if conditions change or worsen, additional actions may be warranted. Another update will provided mid-morning tomorrow, Thursday, Aug. 25.
