UNCW Presents David Dorfman Dance Performance/Residency, Series of Campus, Community Events
Thursday, October 20, 2011
David Dorfman Dance has been traveling internationally lighting
up stages near and beyond with vivid, imaginative performances that
evoke thought and emotion and deliver exciting visual masterpieces
since 1985. Dorfman's current performance, Prophets of
Funk explores prophetic possibililties of music and dance
while maintaining the underlying theme of keeping hope alive.
The New York City-based choreographer states, "Time spent dancing
is not time spent hurting. That's my theory." He challenges
audiences to take a closer look at themselves and their
surroundings.
David Dorfman Dance has been celebrated for its exuberant,
gorgeous and delightfully eccentric style; their newest project
relives the relives the rhythm of the '70s by showcasing a rainbow
of psychedelic costumes and groovy moves driven by the popular and
populist funk sounds of Sly and the Family Stone.
"I think the style is a kind of very athletic funk that refers to
some of our modern and post-modern training," says Dorfman. "It's
really for everyday people. You don't need to know anything about
dance to come enjoy the show."
