Visiting Writers Share Struggles of Race and Gender in Cuba Oct. 6

Two visiting Cuban writers will discuss their books as a part of the University of North Carolina Wilmington's Cuban Voices series in a program entitled "Cultural Realities of Blacks and Women in Cuba" from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6 at the Clock Tower Lounge. Inés María Martiatu, author of Over the Waves and Other Stories, and Alberto Abreu Arcia, author of The Game of Writing and (Re)Writing History, will speak on the challenges race and gender present in Cuba.
A Spanish to English translator will be on-hand for the event, which will be moderated by foreign languages and literature associate professor Emmanuel Harris. The discussion will end in a Q&A session and a reception. The two authors will speak again at the end of the third annual Hispanic Business Development Conference at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8 in the UNCW Warwick Center. This portion of the conference is free to the public and will be conducted in Spanish.
This program is part of UNCW's celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.
