National Trevor Project Joins UNCW to Increase Suicide Prevention Awareness for LGBTQIA Youth

Monday, November 14, 2011

The Trevor Project, the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth, will offer “Lifeguard Workshops” for university and high school students and professionals at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. The workshops are open to the community.

Among 15-24 year olds, LGBTQ youth are four times more likely than their heterosexual peers to attempt suicide. In an interactive environment, the workshops will teach the skills and knowledge needed to help prevent suicide.

A student workshop will be offered 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16 in UNCW’s Azalea Coast Room. This in-depth discussion is designed for those 15-24 years of age and is intended to provide students the skillset needed to recognize the common warning signs of depression and suicide.

A workshop for professionals in education, healthcare and other fields, will be held noon to 2 p.m. Nov. 16 in UNCW Education Building room 166. This professional development presentation will provide resources to professionals how to support LGBTQ youth in crisis and help them feel safe.

The Trevor Project offers a wide variety of programs and resources to help LGBTQ individuals experiencing anxiety and depression: http://www.thetrevorproject.org/.
