The University of North Carolina Wilmington is offering an opportunity for regional nonprofits seeking additional hands to help them serve their communities.

UNC Wilmington's Quality Enhancement for Nonprofit Organizations (QENO) is seeking nonprofit organizations in Columbus, Onslow and Robeson Counties who can benefit from the assistance of an AmeriCorps VISTA member in the upcoming year. The deadline to apply for a volunteer placement is Dec. 20, 2011.

AmeriCorps focuses on the fight against poverty and aims to help those in need by offering volunteer support to other nonprofit organizations. More than 46 million Americans live in poverty. AmeriCorps is a national organization that seeks to address poverty at the local level.

VISTA members commit to full-time service for a year at a nonprofit organization or local government agency, working to build capacity in the areas of volunteer management and community outreach. Any 501(c) (3) organizations in Columbus, Onslow or Robeson Counties engaged in economic development, educational services or efforts to eliminate poverty are encouraged to apply for a VISTA member placement for up to three years.

QENO is a partnership between UNCW, funders, civic leaders and other community organizations to help build the capacity of nonprofits and increase philanthropy in southeastern North Carolina. In addition to placing a VISTA member with the nonprofit, QENO will provide 25 to 40 consulting hours to the organization to build strength in areas such as board governance, financial management and program evaluation.

Nonprofits interested in benefitting from this opportunity should contact QENO graduate assistant Andrew Neylon before Dec. 20 by email at or by phone at 910.962.2650.
