The University of North Carolina Wilmington is one of six colleges and universities nationwide recognized by University Business magazine's "Models of Efficiency" program, which recognizes innovative approaches for streamlining higher education operations through technology or business process improvements.

"Efficient business operations translate into better experiences for students and administrators alike, and the Models of Efficiency program aims to encourage schools to prioritize service," said Tim Goral, editor-in-chief of University Business. "The University of North Carolina Wilmington stands out for developing a very effective solution to a challenging situation."

When the university's admissions office decided to move its entire application infrastructure online using a customized product from AdmissionPros, an overwhelmed staff, struggling to stay on top of paperwork, breathed a collective sigh of relief.

The move not only alleviated stress, the office saved more than $25,000 annually by reducing the need for paper, folders and other office supplies. Even more importantly, service to prospective students was improved with more efficient and accurate tracking of application documents.

Before the switch to an electronic system, harried employees pulled long hours struggling to keep up with the multitude of forms, documents and transcripts flooding the office on a daily basis. Janice Rockwell, director of admissions at UNCW, said employees had to spend too much time copying, filing and tracking documents for each application. Now, the process is faster and more efficient, freeing staff to spend more time assisting prospective students.

"I don't remember the last time we've had to use overtime hours," Rockwell said. "We feel much more organized. We're not digging for information; it's more accessible now. Also, the online system is more user-friendly for applicants, and we want to make the process as easy as possible for students and their families."

UNCW's Information Technology Services was a Models of Efficiency honoree in 2010 for a system it developed for Graduate School applicants. The program is sponsored by Higher One, a leading company focused on helping college business offices manage operations and provide enhanced service to students.
