In many families, financial aid for college can make the difference in whether or not a student has access to a higher education. Financial aid is even more critical during economically challenging times, yet many families are unaware of the financial aid programs available to them and how to apply using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

On Saturday, Feb. 18, the University of North Carolina Wilmington's Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid will offer help in completing and submitting FAFSA forms to high school seniors and their families planning to attend a U.S. college in the fall of 2012. As part of FAFSA Day, this assistance is available in more than 100 locations across the state. UNCW's event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon in Bear Hall.

"It's important to complete the FAFSA early to take advantage of all of the financial aid opportunities available for North Carolinians," said Emily Bliss, director of scholarships and financial aid. "Experienced financial aid specialists will be on site at FAFSA Day to answer questions students and parents may have about how to properly complete the form."

Completion of the FAFSA form is a requirement to be considered for all federal and most state financial aid for college, including grants and scholarships. Students may participate even if they do not plan to attend the college hosting the event.

To register for FAFSA Day, call 866-866-CFNC or go online to CFNC.org/FAFSAday. Participants should bring the following items: both student's and parents' federal 1040 tax forms for 2011; the Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) obtained in advance from www.pin.ed.gov; and a "FAFSA on the Web" worksheet, available at www.fafsa.gov, with as much information entered as possible.
