Hoss Haley: Drawing Machine will be on view in the University of North Carolina Wilmington's Art Gallery at the Cultural Arts Building Feb. 23 through March 30. The exhibition will be accompanied by an artist lecture from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23 in room 2033 of the Cultural Arts Building, immediately followed by a reception for the artist in the gallery. Both the lecture and reception are free and open to the public.

Haley's Drawing Machine is designed as an extension of the hand and controlled by the numerical sequence of pi, creating a dialog between hand, eye and machine. A motor in constant rotation moves a stylus on a painted steel panel - the stylus scratches through the paint exposing the steel below. There are five actuators that control the path of the stylus. In the pi series, each of the five actuators is assigned two digits, 1 and 2, 3 and 6, 4 and 7, 5 and 8, 9 and 0. Every five minutes a new number of the sequence comes up. As each number comes up, the corresponding actuator is set into motion. Because pi is an infinite number, the path of the machine is never the same. The Drawing Machine will be operating during the opening reception.

A native of Kansas, Haley is a conceptually focused sculptor and painter. He studied blacksmithing in Texas and New Mexico. Haley's work has been featured in the New Mexico Museum of Art, Santa Fe; Mint Museum of Craft + Design, Charlotte, N.C.; California Crafts Museum, San Francisco; North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh;[ and Noyes Museum of Art, Oceanville, N.J.. His large format sculptures are part of several major collections including the Charlotte Area Transit System, South Corridor Light Rail, Charlotte; Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas; Courthouse Plaza, Charlotte;[ and Lowe's Corporate Headquarters, Mooresville, N.C.. Haley lives and works in Asheville, N.C.
