Max Allen, University of North Carolina Wilmington chief of staff, has been appointed chair of the National Association of Presidential Assistants in Higher Education (NAPAHE). The announcement was made during the organization's annual conference earlier this month.
The NAPAHE, part of the American Council on Education, is a prestigious national organization comprised of more than 500 members dedicated to improving higher education through programs, networking and information resources that address the broad range of roles fulfilled by presidential assistants.
UNC Wilmington Chancellor Gary L. Miller said, "I am delighted that Max has been elected to be chair of such a prestigious national organization. Such recognitions come only to those having a distinguished record of achievement. I know no one more deserving of this singular honor."
In his new role, Allen will be responsible for leading the NAPAHE in support of its mission and coordinating the work of the board and its committees to further enhance higher education leadership.
Allen said, "I am delighted to have been chosen by my peers to lead a distinguished and dedicated group of public and private higher education professionals who work closely with presidents and chancellors at colleges and universities across this country. It is a great honor and I am extremely grateful to have been asked to serve as chair."
Allen has been a member of NAPAHE for nearly 15 years. He has served on several of the organization's committees and has been a member of the organization's board for more than half a decade. He currently serves as vice chair of the NAPAHE board.
Prior to joining UNCW as chief of staff in 2003, Allen served as executive assistant to the president and the director of university relations for Georgia College and State University for nine years. In 1994, Allen retired from the United States Navy after serving 17 years as a public affairs officer.
