High School Dropouts Recognized for Accomplishments during Youthbuild Completion Ceremony July 13
Thursday, July 12, 2012
Youths who previously dropped out of high school will celebrate their accomplishments with the Wilmington Housing Authorities' Youthbuild program during their completion ceremony at the University of North Carolina Wilmington 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Today, Friday, July 13. More than 125 people are expected to attend the ceremony.
Members of UNC Wilmington's Dropout Prevention Coalition teamed with leaders of the Wilmington Housing Authority to provide hands-on mentoring to area students through the Youthbuild Program, which aims to help former students earn their GEDs and acquire the skills needed to gain employment.
More than 30 students between the ages of 16-24 participated in this year's program and will take part in the ceremony. Students will wear caps and gowns to commemorate their hard work and efforts to complete the program. Many of the students are now finishing high school, enrolled in postsecondary training or are entering employment internships.
According to Janna Robertson, UNCW's Dropout Prevention Coalition co-coordinator, the participants of the program are very excited for the ceremony since it will be the closest event to a graduation that many of the students have experienced. The event will include a dance demonstration, a keynote speaker, and a video highlighting the year's accomplishments.
The UNCW Watson School of Education has collaborated with Youthbuild for several years and to assist students in the area to be successful. This year's program is a collaboration with the community designed to raise awareness about the magnitude of the high school dropout program in the New Hanover County region.
Refreshments will be donated by the Community Boys and Girls Club of Wilmington.
