Mavis Staples Performance at UNCW Rescheduled for Feb. 5
Monday, December 10, 2012
UNCW Masters Series Headliner Mavis Staples has been invited to perform at the 2013 MusicCares Person of the Year Gala honoring Bruce Springsteen. The Grammy-award winning artist was scheduled to perform at Kenan Auditorium the day before the event. Coordinators at UNCW have made accommodation for Staples to perform two days earlier, on Tuesday, Feb. 5, so that she may attend the MusicCares event.
The MusicCares Person of the Year tribute ceremony is one of the most prestigious events held during GRAMMY Week, which culminates with the 55th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013. Proceeds from the 23rd annual Person of the Year Gala will provide support for MusicCares, which ensures that music people have a place to turn in times of financial, medical and personal need. Most recently, the foundation established a fund for victims of Hurricane Sandy.
"As a matter of policy, our office has never before rescheduled a performance date,” stated Norman Bemelmans, UNCW director of cultural arts. “But Ms. Staples was invited to participate in this charitable event and was willing to volunteer her time to do so, which I think speaks volumes about her integrity and commitment as an artist and as a person. So we also wanted to do what we could to assist her and MusicCares in their very worthy efforts. We hope our patrons will agree this was the right thing to do."
One of the greatest voices of our time, Mavis Staples' remarkable career began in the 1950s when her family's gospel group, The Staples Singers, became a household name with popular hits such as "I'll Take You There" and "Respect Yourself." Since that time, Staples has maintained her gospel roots while blazing new trails – taking her from the epicenter of the civil rights movement and collaborations with artists such as Bob Dylan, The Band and Prince to her 2011 Grammy-winning album You Are Not Alone, produced by Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy.
Mavis Staples performs at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 5 in UNCW's Kenan Auditorium. The performance is co-sponsored by The Penguin-98.3 fm. Tickets are $25-35 (reserved seating). More information is available at the Kenan Auditorium Box Office, M-F, noon to 6 p.m., 910.962.3500 or 800.732.3643 and at uncw.edu/arts.
Current ticket holders for the performance at UNCW have already been contacted and are working with box office personnel to exchange or refund their tickets.
