Wilmington, N.C. - Financial aid for college can make the difference in whether or not a student has access to a higher education, yet many families are unaware of the financial aid programs available to them and how to apply using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

On Saturday, Feb. 23, the UNCW Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid will help high school seniors and their families complete FAFSA forms. UNCW’s event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon in Bear Hall. Registration is required.

As part of FAFSA Day, similar events for seniors who plan to attend U.S. colleges in fall 2013 will take place in more than 100 locations across the state. Students may participate even if they do not plan to attend the college hosting the event. To register, visit CFNC.org/FAFSAday or call 866-866-CFNC.

Participants should bring the following items: student's and parents’ federal 1040 tax forms for 2012; the Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) obtained in advance from www.pin.ed.gov; and a "FAFSA on the Web" worksheet, available at www.fafsa.gov, with as much information entered as possible.

Completion of the FAFSA form is a requirement to be considered for all federal and most state financial aid for college, including grants and scholarships. It's important to complete the FAFSA early to take advantage of all of the financial aid opportunities available for North Carolinians. Experienced financial aid specialists will be on site during FAFSA Day to answer questions that students and parents may have about how to properly complete the form.
