UNCW Celebrates 20 Years of International Culture with Week of Activities, Festival

UNC Wilmington marks 20 years of taking Wilmington around the world with its annual Intercultural Week, Feb. 11-16. iWeek, an annual celebration of diversity and culture, sponsored by the Office of International Programs, brings films, music, food and guests from across the globe to campus and the community. The week culminates with the popular Intercultural Festival (iFest) on Saturday, Feb. 16 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Burney Center.
UNCW is committed to exploring global perspectives. During the 2011-12 academic year, the university hosted more than 300 international students and faculty from 40 different countries. Additionally, nearly 800 UNCW students participated in education programs around the world.

Monday, Feb. 11
Hispanic Students in Selective Predominantly White Public Universities: Characteristics and Factors Affecting Performance
10-11 a.m., Education Building, 162
Given the growth of first-generation Hispanic Americans in the southeastern United States, the region is positioned for positive change if education is set as a priority for this population. Learn about factors that lead Hispanic students to become successful college students. Implications for parents, K-12 educators and institutions of higher education are discussed.
Tuesday, Feb. 12
Lunar New Year
6-8 p.m., Wagoner Dining Hall
Celebrate the Year of the Snake with the Office of International Programs. Join us as we ring in the Lunar New Year and enjoy Asian-themed cuisine, test your skills in a chopsticks race, learn about study abroad opportunities in Asia and much more. Cost: meal swipe or cash.
Wednesday, Feb. 13
Through the Eyes of Refugees: Personal Stories from Refugees in Wilmington

Refugees from Burma and Colombia now living in Wilmington will share their experiences with us. We will also learn about the work done with refugees by the Interfaith Refugee Ministry and the United Nations. Sponsored by the Coastal Carolina United Nations Association.

Around the World
11 a.m.-2 p.m., FUU Azalea Coast Room
Join us for a sweet trip around the world - international culture will be celebrated with sweet treats from eight different countries. Sponsored by Housing and Residence Life.
Friday, Feb. 15
Contra-Tiempo Salsa Workshop
7-9 p.m., Warwick Center
UNCW Artists in Residence CONTRA-TIEMPO will conduct an interactive Salsa workshop for all ages and levels of experience. Sponsored by UNCW's Office of Cultural Arts, in collaboration with Centro Hispano and RITMO Latin Dance Club.
Saturday, Feb. 16
20th Annual Intercultural Festival
11-3 p.m., Burney Center
A celebration highlighting cultures and countries represented in Wilmington and at UNCW. Food, dance, music, performances and exhibits showcase the rich cultural diversity of our community and beyond. Don't miss the fun! Free parking in lots M, E and A.
