Growth in UNCW’s student enrollment, numbers of faculty and staff, and the types and volume of teaching, research, and service activities have all contributed to increased pressure on the campus’ academic facilities.  Last year, the State of North Carolina authorized UNCW to use remaining funds from the Teaching Laboratory Building project to renovate the Social and Behavioral Sciences (S&BS) Building, providing us with an important opportunity to address our most compelling space needs.  The fact that there are no new major construction or renovation projects involving academic space currently approved for UNCW means we have a special obligation to be thoughtful, forward-looking, and strategic in availing ourselves of this opportunity.  It is essential that we develop a plan for this renovation project, which would begin in early 2014, that is aligned with our university mission and allocates space in the most efficient and productive manner possible.

To address those needs, I have charged a Social and Behavioral Sciences Planning Committee, listed below, to study and recommend a plan for how best to utilize a renovated S&BS Building.  To meet the goal of generating a plan that is strategic in nature, the committee will be expected to consider relocations of units and offices currently in S&BS to other venues, and vice versa.  Indeed, it is already established that specific offices presently housed in the S&BS Building, such as Conference Services and the Entrepreneurship Center, will move to other quarters, freeing up space that will enable other relocations.

The committee is expected to put forth a plan, for my evaluation and recommendation to the Chancellor, by April 1, 2013.  However, the committee is prepared to adjust the planning schedule as necessary to ensure the August 2014 reopening of this building.

We will provide additional details as this project develops, including information about the proposed alternate locations for those who will be displaced by this renovation.  Thank you for your support of this important project.
