The Friends of UNCW recently awarded more than $12,600 in grant funding to faculty and staff to support programs and services across campus.
“This is our favorite time of the year because it is when we learn most about the university through the grant applications,” said Elizabeth Dunn, chair of the Grants Committee.
The Friends of UNCW, a volunteer organization celebrating its 50th anniversary, funds the grants annually. This year, the group received 37 applications from departments across campus, and the volunteers were able to fund about a third of them. Grant amounts typically range from $350-$2,500.
The campus programs receiving grants include: art and art history, business, biology and marine biology, communication studies, education, international programs, the University Union art collection, sociology, Randall Library and a summer leadership camp for school-age girls.
The Friends formed in 1963 to help Wilmington College increase the library’s holdings to a minimum of 50,000 volumes – a requirement at that time for accreditation as a four-year institution. The volunteers also support an endowed merit scholarship and decorate Kenan and Wise houses each year for university holiday celebrations.
