Film Festival Showcases the First-Year Experience at UNCW

Last month, the inaugural Film Festival For First-Year Students (F4) premiered 31 student-made films in Lumina Theater. The theme of the festival was “Making Waves: The First Year Experience at UNCW.”

Film submissions were limited to first-year students enrolled in first-year seminar and covered a range of topics, from a day in the life of a UNCW student to why we should recycle more. The festival also gave students the opportunity to reminisce about the challenges of their first year and a reason to laugh as they shared common experiences with their peers.

Waves of Our Own, created by Caseley Amick, Grace Delbridge, Morgan Jones, Olivia LeMay and Trenton Wesley, was announced as the winner. It explored the initial worries, excited moments and friendships that students experience in their first semester at UNCW.  Honorable mention was given to UNI College Habits, a film about the difficulties of studying in college and the issues of time management.

Other notable films that were in the running included Outside of the Classroom by Kelby Roberson, Margaret Stewart, Sumer Iyoob, Alexandria Golden, and Matt McAlister; and Freshmania by Matt McFarling, Kim Geiger, Liz Kloster, Devin Hofknecht and Catherine Becton.
