Wilmington, NC (April 7, 2014) – UNCW’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship will host a breakfast event with leaders from five of the region’s largest companies to discuss their needs and the common challenges they face at 7:30 a.m. on April 24, the University announced today. The Big 5 Employers: Pains That Keep Us Up at Night will create an opportunity for innovators to learn about the solutions large local employers and industries currently need.

Mark Varno, Vice President, General Electric; Paul Colvin, Executive Vice President, PPD; Joe Finley, President, Castle Branch; TA “Mickey” Finn with the NC Military Business Center; and Charlie Maimone, Vice Chancellor of Business Affairs, UNCW, are all confirmed speakers for the CIE’s marquee event as part of the new CIE event series.

The CIE works with a number of local businesses and partners to provide unique opportunities and networking events. Human Capital Solutions, Pathfinder Wealth Consulting, tekMountain/Castle Branch and UNCW’s Cameron School of Business are sponsoring The Big 5 Employers: Pains that Keep Us Up at Night.

“We are always looking at new opportunities for our entrepreneurial community that will help facilitate sales growth and business partnerships,” said CIE Executive Director Jim Roberts. “Key business decision-makers will present their current challenges to offer local innovators insight into how they can help meet existing needs. By fostering this dialogue, we hope entrepreneurs will gain an understanding of the specific goods and services that are needed for particular businesses and industries in our area and in markets like Raleigh and Charlotte.”

Since opening their doors in September of last year, the CIE has hosted a large number of forums and events, including Rocket Pitch, which has played a role in helping CIE startups secure equity financing. During this time, the CIE has also become home to 19 startups, which have created dozens of jobs and internships.

The event will take place at The Terraces on Sir Tyler. Seating is limited and registration is currently open. Tickets can be purchased for just $20. Doors will open at 7:30 a.m. and the program will begin at 8 a.m.

The CIE works to identify and nurture high-growth, high-impact companies and to accelerate the entrepreneurial ecosystem in southeastern North Carolina. The facility is located at 803 South College Road, at the south perimeter of the UNCW campus. The CIE houses UNCW’s Small Business and Technology Development Center (SBTDC), the future technology transfer operations and the Seahawk Innovation Fund. In addition, UNCW faculty and students are also able to use the CIE as an accelerator space for academic and entrepreneurial pursuits.
